The Alexis de Tocqueville Library, designed by O.M.A. for Caen la mer, opened its doors in 2018. Located at the tip of the Caen peninsula, this national-scale cultural facility aims to offer the entire population a place where ideas circulate, are built, discussed, and shared; an innovative and flexible tool that strengthens democracy and individual freedoms in the digital age. The first facility delivered in France by O.M.A. since Congrexpo Lille in 1994, this project follows in the tradition of the “building-tools” developed by the agency founded by Rem Koolhaas, after the Kunsthal in Rotterdam (1992), the Seattle Central Library (2004), and the Casa da Música in Porto (2005).
